How to Treat Elbow Pain and Inflammation
Elbow pain is a common type of pain that has varying degrees of discomfort. People with inflammation may report a burning sensation, while people with an elbow fracture may experience tingling. Because there are many types of injuries that can occur with the elbow, it’s important to see your doctor for a full evaluation. Once you know what you are dealing with, you can then work with your doctor to create an appropriate treatment plan.
What Causes Elbow Pain?
Even though there are many causes for elbow pain, most conditions are the result of repetitive activities or injuries. Here are the most common sources of elbow discomfort:
- Tendonitis
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Little Leaguer’s elbow
- Cubital tunnel syndrome
- Radial tunnel syndrome
- Fractures or dislocation
Treating Elbow Pain and Inflammation
To determine what you are suffering from, you will likely need a physical examination, a review of your medical history and an x-ray. Once you have been diagnosed, your treatment plan may include the following:
- RICE. First and foremost, follow the RICE method – rest, ice, compression and elevation. The joint needs rest from the repetitive movements. Icing your elbow for 20 minutes, three times a day, is helpful at reducing inflammation and swelling.
- Stretches and exercises. To minimize stiffness and improve flexibility, it’s helpful to stretch the tendons and muscles around your joint. Possible elbow stretches include the forearm extensor stretch and the eccentric wrist stretch.
- Acupuncture. Acupuncture has proven to be effective at treating conditions like tennis elbow. The process stimulates nerves that release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain to promote healing.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP is actually more effective than cortisone shots for treating tennis elbow. Because this area gets little blood, it takes longer to heal. PRP delivers platelets at the site to speed up healing.
