Scoliosis Awareness Month: Jersey Rehab Can Assist with Your Chronic Back Pain
June is Scoliosis Awareness Month. Scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, is the most common spinal deformity, affecting roughly 3 percent of the American population. Luckily, advancements in technology have made it easier and less invasive to treat scoliosis in all ages. Bracing and surgery are far more effective, and many cases only require regular observation.
If you or someone in your household has scoliosis, rest assured that there are new ways to treat the condition. In fact, Jersey Rehab is one of the places where you can address scoliosis pain and avoid the need for surgery.
When is Treatment Needed?
First, it’s important to know that treatment is not always necessary with curvature of the spine. The most common type of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, which is where the cause is unknown. It’s most likely to occur in children between the ages of 10 and 18, with girls needing treatment more than boys.
- If the spinal curve is less than 25 degrees, regular monitoring is needed.
- If the spinal curve is increasing, or is between 25 and 40 degrees, bracing is usually recommended.
- If the angle exceeds 40 degrees, surgery may be needed.
However, some forms of scoliosis are caused by underlying conditions like muscular dystrophy or connective tissue disorders. In these cases, scoliosis is more difficult to treat and may require a lifetime of ongoing treatments and therapies.
How Jersey Rehab Helps People with Scoliosis
Alternative treatment can be used in place of traditional treatment or alongside it, depending on your needs. Our goal is to help our clients lead normal, physically active lives, particularly if the scoliosis is caused by another condition. Some of the treatments that may be recommended are:
- Physical therapy. We focus on specific exercises that stretch the back and alleviate pain and discomfort. Examples include the chest stretch and lower back stretch.
- Chiropractic. Scoliosis-specific techniques are most effective for treating scoliosis pain. The techniques are similar to what clients receive in physical therapy.
- Spinal cord stimulation. With this treatment, a system is implanted in the back to release low-voltage electrical currents. If the treatment is ineffective, the system can be removed.
- Platelet rich plasma. PRP can help slow the progression of scoliosis, particularly when the condition is caused by deteriorating facet joints. It can also reduce pain and inflammation.
- Stem cell injections. Similar to PRP, stem cell injections may be effective if your curvature problems are caused by the deterioration of the facet joints. These injections may also slow progression and decrease inflammation.
