September 20th-26th is National Surgical Technologists Week
National Surgical Technologists Week is celebrated every year during the third week of September, making this year’s dates the 20th-26th. The weeklong celebration is held by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), a national organization that represents over 80,000 surgical technologists. Its goal is to improve the profession to ensure the highest quality care for patients.
What a Surgical Technologist Does
Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams and work alongside surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses. Their primary role is to prepare the operating room by setting up sterile instruments, equipment and supplies like drapes, gowns, gloves and suction tubing. Surgical technologists also put together the equipment and make sure it’s functioning correctly.
As you can see, surgical technologists are a critical part of any operating room team. Let’s learn more about National Surgical Technologists Week and how you can make a difference.
History of National Surgical Technologists Week
The Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) was established in 1969 by several organizations. In 1984, the AST decided that the third week of every September would be a time to promote and celebrate surgical technologists, including those with pain management skills.
Surgical technologists are essential not only in the operating room but also in our communities. By recognizing their role, we can celebrate them as we do doctors, nurses and other medical personnel. Additionally, we can safely assume that surgical technologists have a greater appreciation due to COVID-19.
How to Celebrate National Surgical Technologists Week
Do you know of a surgical technologist in your life? Or perhaps you are one! This is an excellent time to thank this special person – or give yourself a pat on the back! Here are some ways to participate in National Surgical Technologists Week.
- Print a FREE poster. The AST is offering a free poster download that can be printed from any home printer. Hang them up at home or in a surgical center to show your support and celebrate these essential workers.
- Send appreciation gifts. Show these essential workers that they matter. A catered lunch, coffee bar, health club membership or massage are wonderful ways to say thanks.
- Share information on social media. Let your followers know that it’s Surgical Technologists week. Let others know that these medical workers are essential!
- Demonstrate skills. Show people how to use PPE equipment or how to wash hands properly. This is imperative in surgical centers.
