Can Cold Weather Increase Pain
Now that the weather is getting colder, you may be feeling more stiffness, aches and pains. It’s unclear why some people experience more pain with cold weather than others, but there are several steps you can take to keep yourself comfortable.
Let’s learn more about why the cold weather can increase pain in some people and the things you can do to keep yourself feeling your best.
Why Does the Cold Weather Cause Pain and Stiffness?
One theory for why some people experience more pain during the winter is due to barometric pressure. When there are changes in barometric pressure, the tendons, muscles and scar tissue expand and contract, causing pain in the joints. Low temperatures can also make the fluid inside the joints thicker.
Additionally, cooler temperatures can cause stiff muscles, which makes everyday activities more painful. As a result, some people end up moving around less, further aggravating their pain. And as the muscles grow stiff and tight, painful muscle spasms are more likely to occur.
Everyone’s bodies are different, which is why people respond differently to the changes in weather. It’s also important to point out that bad weather can negatively impact a person’s mood, causing them to feel sad or depressed. When feeling this way, pain and discomfort are magnified.
Tips for Managing Pain During the Cold Winter Months
Because you can’t just up and move to Florida for the winter, it’s important that you know how to manage your pain when the cold weather hits. It may take some trial and error to find what works, but eventually, you should be able to manage your symptoms using the below techniques.
(Note: If you have any new or unusual symptoms with your joints, contact your pain management doctor.)
- Dress in layers to keep warm. You can always remove layers if you need to. Also, dressing in layers eases the shock of cold weather on the body.
- Maintain a healthy weight to keep pressure off your joints. With the holidays here, this may require you to watch your sweets!
- Build up your muscles and joints by staying active. It’s recommended to get 30-45 minutes of cardio, strength or flexibility training most days of the week.
- Eat a balanced diet and fill your plate with “whole” foods like fruits and vegetables. Also be sure to get enough Vitamin D to promote a healthy mind and body.
