Arthritis Awareness Month: How We Help Manage Arthritis Pain at Jersey Rehab
Arthritis is a painful condition that affects 40 million people in the United States. Due to its widespread discomfort, arthritis can prevent people from living active, healthy lifestyles. Sadly, this puts these individuals at a higher risk for other health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Fortunately, those living with arthritis have various treatment options.
Jersey Rehab Pain and Management is a dynamic, responsive healthcare center that helps individuals lead active, productive lifestyles that are free from pain. One of the most common conditions that we treat is arthritis. We are proud to report that the majority of our clients have an improved quality of life under our care.
Here are some of the ways that we manage arthritis pain at Jersey Rehab.
Stay on Top of the Latest Technology
As a client of Jersey Rehab, you can rest assured that you will always receive therapies that rely on the latest technology. All of our treatments are aimed at reducing pain and discomfort so that our clients can lead a healthy lifestyle. If they are out of pain, they can exercise more often and eat a healthier diet, further reducing their symptoms.
Research shows that eating an anti-inflammatory diet and getting regular exercise are important parts of managing arthritis. By doing this, our clients improve joint mobility, relieve stiffness, reduce pain and fatigue and strengthen muscles and bones.
Cortisone Shots
Some clients respond well to cortisone shots, which relieve pain and inflammation in a specific area of the body. These injections are generally recommended for specific types of arthritis, such as gout, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They can be easily delivered in our office, with few side effects. However, due to the risk of deteriorating cartilage, we only recommend them 3-4 times a year.
Trigger Point Injections
A trigger point injection (TPI) is an injection inserted into a specific part of the muscled (called a trigger point) to deliver pain relief. Usually, these are areas where the muscles bind together and create knots. We recommend trigger point injections for treating arthritic pain in the back, arms or legs.
TENS
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a type of treatment where an electrical current is sent to specific nerves. The electrical current interrupts pain signals to relax the muscles and decrease pain. It’s also believed that TENS therapy promotes endorphin production for widespread pain relief. Research shows that TENS is most effective for back pain and joint pain.
At Jersey Rehab, we offer our clients a number of therapies they can try, while encouraging a healthy diet, regular exercise and medications or supplements recommended by their doctor. We are happy to work with our clients’ care teams, though we hope to reduce the number of medications they are on, such as prescription NSAIDs, narcotics and other painkillers.
