Choosing Healthy Foods During Summer BBQs
Summer is right around the corner, and with it, sunshine, water, and lots and lots of BBQs! Every weekend seems to have a neighborhood block party, holiday, or birthday party, complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, macaroni & potato salads, and ice cold drinks that are extra refreshing on a hot summer day.
So, how’s a person to choose healthy foods during all these BBQs?
Opt for a bean burger instead of the real thing-
There are loads of awesome, healthy options for traditional dishes. Black beans or Portobello mushrooms make for great burger substitutes and fish tacos are a delicious alternative to pulled pork sandwiches.
Go easy on the sweet drinks-
There’s tons of sugar in iced tea, lemonade, and many cocktails. Limit yourself to just a few sugary drinks or nix them altogether and create your own fruit-infused water. Drinking water throughout the day will ensure you’re less likely to reach for the sugary stuff in the first place!
Fill up on veggies-
There’s always a fruit salad or vegetable selection- corn on the cob anyone?! Loading your plate with that grilled zucchini & squash kebab is a much healthier way to go about your day. Not sure if there will be a bunch of veggies to pick from? Bring this Southwestern Grilled Sweet Potato Salad!
Moderation in everything-
Don’t forgo your most-loved BBQ dishes all summer. Having a little bit helps to curb your cravings, while still getting the flavor of your fav dishes. It’s okay to splurge on that ice cream float once in a while!
Whether it’s your 1st BBQ of the summer or 14th, remember your health and fitness goals and continually work towards them. We’ll be right there with you!
