We all know that the cold, dreary weather can have an impact on our moods. But did you know that it can also have an effect on your joints? Weather-related joint pain is a real thing, and it’s believed to occur from changes in barometric pressure. 

Scientists are still unable to pinpoint exactly what it is about the weather that leads some people to experience joint pain. Nevertheless, if you’re someone who struggles with this, finding ways to relieve your pain is key. Now that we’re headed into some of the coldest, rainiest months of the year, here are some of the best ways to minimize joint pain. 

Keep Yourself Warm 

You can’t just move to a warmer climate when it gets cold, but you can keep your body warm. One of the best things you can do is dress in layers, including warm socks, gloves and a hat. This way, you’ll have everything you need to keep yourself comfortable and warm throughout the day. When you’re home, use an electric blanket, turn the heat up and take warm showers. 

Try a Paraffin Bath 

To give yourself a paraffin treatment, you need a small machine that melts paraffin wax. To use the machine, dip your hands and feet into the wax and watch it harden over your skin. This allows your body to absorb heat, soothing achy joints and muscles. Paraffin spas are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased online and in stores. 

Use a Heating Pad 

Heat therapy is another effective way to ease joint pain because it increases blood flow to the affected area and soothes achy joints. Be sure to only apply heat in 20 minute increments, as prolonged heat can cause swelling. Some of the best times to use a heating pad are when you’re working, sitting or about to work out. 

Stay Active 

In the winter, it’s easier to be less active. But don’t let the cold temperatures and dreary days stop you from being mobile. Find ways to exercise, whether it’s dancing, stretching, walking, swimming or doing yoga. Aside from your local community center or park district, consider an online fitness class or online videos. Staying active in the winter will also help you maintain a healthy weight, which is important for joint health.
