Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections for Patients Suffering with Acute and Chronic Pain

SEMGeeks2020-11-25T11:32:04-05:00

As you can see in this ABC newscast, some patients are finding tremendous relief from pain from platelet rich plasma (RPR) injections, a regenerative treatment for soft tissue, muscle, ligament or tendon injury. Platelet rich plasma treatment is an increasingly popular option for giving a biological boost to the healing process, and has received significant attention from the media. It has been used by several NFL players, including Victor Cruz, of the New York Giants, Heinz Ward, of the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as elite athletes from other sports, including Tiger Woods and Maria Sharapova.

We offer PRP Therapy right in our offices in Belleville, Rumson, West Orange, Hackensack and the Bronx.

Here is an explanation you can provide to your patients as to how it works:

  • PRP is produced from a person’s own blood. It is a concentration of a certain type of cell known as platelets, which circulate through the blood and are critical for blood clotting. Platelets and the liquid plasma portion of the blood contain many factors that are essential for the cell recruitment, multiplication and specialization that are required for healing.
  • After a blood sample is obtained from a patient, the blood is put into a centrifuge, which is a tool that separates blood into its many components. Platelet rich plasma is collected and treated and then delivered to an injured area of bone or soft tissue, such as a tendon or ligament. The blood platelets and white blood cells then work together to promote healing in a more natural way. The growth factors released by platelets help stimulate healing and tissue growth, allowing us to treat tissue damage without surgery.

Physicians from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York say several basic science studies in animal models suggest that PRP treatment can improve healing in soft tissue and bone.

These favorable findings in animal models have led to the widespread use of PRP treatment for a variety of conditions, including acute and chronic tendon problems, as well as injuries to ligaments and muscles.

In a small study involving knee osteoarthritis, PRP treatment was shown to be more effective than hyaluronic acid treatment. PRP has also resulted in positive or similar results when used in the treatment of rotator cuff tears and medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries in the knee.

We offer PRP Therapy in our Jersey Rehab Pain Management offices. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our main office at 973-844-9220.
